Geothermal is one of the most energy-efficient heating and cooling options available to homeowners today. The climate in southern Oregon and northern California is well suited for this kind of system, and if you’re considering your options right now, you’d be wise to look into geothermal.
If you aren’t familiar with geothermal energy, you may be wondering how this kind of system works. Here’s how:
Most of a geothermal system is installed underground. The temperature underground stays, on average, 50 degrees year round. The geothermal system takes advantage of this. Instead of using the air above ground — which can be quite a bit warmer or cooler, depending on the time of year — the geothermal system uses the temperature below ground to heat or cool your home.
A geothermal system uses less energy than more traditional systems, and this means your heating and cooling costs will be lower. According to Energy Savers, a geothermal system uses 25 to 50 percent less electricity than other types of heating and air-conditioning systems. Another benefit is lifespan. The internal components of a geothermal system have an average lifespan of 25 years, while the outside components have an average lifespan of 50 years, according to Energy Savers. The initial cost of a geothermal system is higher than the cost of other systems. But because of the energy savings, you could recoup that cost in five to 10 years.
A geothermal system offers clean and even heating and cooling. If you are interested in learning more about a geothermal system or would like a quote, contact Metal Masters Inc.
