If you’re concerned about the quality of your indoor air, you can take several measures to correct the situation. Three of the most effective measures are:
- Using air filters correctly and installing an air cleaner or purifier.
- Improving your ventilation and humidification.
- Controlling pollution from generic household items.
You can improve indoor air quality tremendously by using the right filter and changing it frequently. The right filter can go a long way toward trapping particulate matter that you don’t want in your air. Frequent changing reduces buildup and also increases efficiency. For most homes, a filter with a MERV — minimum efficiency rating value — of 8 to 11 is sufficient.
Electronic air cleaners also remove particulate matter. They use electrostatic attraction to trap charged particles and draw them through an ionization chamber, where the particles receive a charge. After they go through this process, the particles attach to surfaces in your home, where they can be easily removed when you clean.
UV lights, meanwhile, can remove airborne germs. Installed in your ductwork, the ultraviolet light destroys the cellular structure of mold and bacteria. Together, air filters, electronic air cleaners and UV lights can significantly improve the quality of your indoor air.
Another important measure is improving your ventilation and humidification. Good ventilation ensures the removal of smoke and gas when you’re cooking and moisture when you doing the dishes, showering or bathing. This helps to keep respiratory problems minimal and mold and mildew at bay.
The final step in improving your indoor air quality is controlling the source of the pollution. Most pollution in your home comes from outdoors, but there are indoor sources, as well. Gas stoves, kerosene heaters and poorly insulated garages can all be sources of pollution.
